Yengdeumgpo Community and Wellness Center

Conceived as an 8,650-square-meter integrated civic and wellness center, the project reconnects a fragmented urban site to the public green corridors of the Han River. Anchored by the concept of a highly shaded, breathable civic pavilion, the design deploys a monumental, hovering canopy that shelters a semi-enclosed, multi-level community promenade. To negotiate the boundary between public openness and internal programmatic needs, the facade is conceived as an active architectural membrane; a rigorous system of Cor-Ten steel vertical louvers acts as a sculptural environmental filter, protecting the interior while maintaining dynamic visual communication with the street. This filtered transparency allows expansive daylighting across the double-height library and indoor rock-climbing gym while resolving the tension between civic access and programmatic security. Emphasizing a continuous indoor-outdoor relationship, every programmed space—including the securely enclosed ground-level kindergarten—extends onto dedicated exterior balconies and terraces. Unified beneath the overarching canopy, which integrates photovoltaics and an active rooftop fitness promenade, the architecture establishes a sophisticated, climate-responsive civic destination.
